CT Types of Braces
Braces have become increasingly popular as both a cosmetic and corrective treatment. Since the invention of braces, it is clear that there have been advances in the technology and appearance of braces, to make them appear less noticeable. Traditional braces have brackets that are shiny metal. Although classic braces are still common, there are various options for patients who desire a more modern and less noticeable approach.
Types
Here at Central Texas Orthodontics, we offer a variety of braces options, personalized for each patient. These include:
Self-Ligating Braces
Self -ligating braces are made from the same material as traditional braces. They come with traditional metal, ceramic, or clear brackets. They are the same size as metal braces, but use a specialized clip in place of elastics to help the archwire guide teeth into place. The clip helps reduce the amount of pressure being placed on the tooth, and requires feweradjustments because there are no elastics to replace.
Clear (Ceramic) Braces
Clear ceramic braces are made of a clear material that allow them to appear less visible on the tooth. Because of this, they are a popular option for both teens and adult patients who desire a less noticeable option. Because they are clear however, closer attention to oral hygiene is necessary in order to avoid staining the clear brackets. Ceramic braces are larger and are more brittle than their metal counterparts. For these reasons, ceramic braces tend to be used more on upper front teeth than on lower teeth.
Clear Aligners
Clear aligners include a series of visible, removable, and comfortable acrylic trays that do not require brackets, and work to straighten the teeth in the least noticeable way possible. Not only are the aligners invisible, they are removable, so you can eat and drink what you want while in treatment, plus brushing and flossing are less of a hassle. The aligners are comfortable and have no metal to cause mouth abrasions during treatment.
